A first-hand experience – Lift Company

I was in an office building when I entered the lift and pushed to go down from the 6th floor to the 1st. After the doors closed the lift descended ever so slightly, maybe an inch or two, and then stopped. And lo and behold the doors didn’t open! I did what anyone would do and waited patiently for the lift to start moving again but when it didn’t, I started to grow a little anxious.

Of course, working at a ...

Get into the habit of lift maintenance

It sounds like the start of an old joke “two nuns in Rome enter a lift…” but there was nothing funny about this story that saw two poor nuns getting stuck in a lift, for three whole days, without food or water, in Rome. The women, a 68-year-old from New Zealand and a 58-year-old from Ireland, were visiting the Marist Sisters’ convent when an electrical fault trapped them inside the lift for an entire weekend. It was unfortunate that neither ...

A Roaring Success

Did you know that back in the heyday of Rome’s Colosseum gladiator fights that they actually used elevators to transport the lions into the arena ahead of the fights! There were 24 original elevators used at the Colosseum that were all manually-operated during the 1st and 3rd centuries AD to transport lions and other animals including leopards, bears, wolves, ostriches and deer! They certainly had a strange idea of entertainment didn’t they? Well, now after a 15 month restoration project, ...

Need a lift?

When you see an image like the one below, you could be forgiven for thinking it was something that could only be found in a fictional action film. Admittedly it does look like something Tony Stark or Bruce Wayne would have in their estate but in fact, car lifts are more common than you think.

Car Lifts

Car lifts are the revolutionary method of transporting ...

A peek inside the secret world of lifts

We’d often like to be a fly on the wall on some of the lift installations we have completed – what can we say, we’re nosey! It would be great to see the kinds of people that step in and out of our lifts and the goings on that happen between floors.

It was recently the annual Met Gala which reminded us of a particular lift incident that we wish we could have witnessed first-hand. Don’t know what we’re talking about? ...

Beam me up to the second level Scotty!

Here at Sheridan Lifts, we have been installing disabled lifts in people’s homes for a number of years now. As a lift company, we think it’s important that people have the freedom to move about their home as they wish, even if they are physically unable to keep up with the demand that it puts on their body. As we get older, we all have a little trouble getting around as well as we did when we were 25 years ...

Toilet emergency

Ever been in a lift and been dying to use the toilet? It’s probably happened to most of us, but what about being trapped in a lift for hours due to an earthquake and really needing to go? It might sound like your worst nightmare but it’s what happens in Japan quite a lot due to their frequent powerful earthquakes. The most recent was a 7.8 magnitude quake on Saturday where 14 lifts were trapped between storeys.

Now, officials are thinking ...

The things that are caught on CCTV

A man in South Korea cheated death this month when the lift he stepped into almost cut him in half! The whole thing was caught on the lift CCTV. As the man steps into the lift the whole thing continues to move upwards and he hangs half in and half out of the lift. He clings on unsure what to do, whether to pull himself into the space or to try and push himself back out? As the lift becomes ...

A brief encounter

What’s the most awkward lift encounter you’ve ever had? Was it maybe with a co-worker who you don’t get on with? A neighbour who you don‘t get on with? Or maybe even an ex-boyfriend or girlfriend who you haven’t seen for a while?

For one man, his most awkward lift experience was probably when he robbed a poor 77-year-old woman of her handbag and then couldn’t get out of the lift. Very awkward indeed. Thankfully, the victim wasn’t harmed and even ...

Could you really survive an elevator fall?

There are numerous sources of advice and tips on how to survive an elevator fall or accident, but are any of the guides actually accurate? We’ve all probably heard the little nugget of advice that, in the event of an elevator you are travelling in free-falling, you should jump up at the very last second before impact and you’ll be unharmed. But this has proven to be unhelpful advice as it doesn’t actually work (it was proven false on MythBusters!) ...
