Three years ago, Anthony was working as a self-employed electrician when his father took unwell.

Suffering from anxiety and depression, Anthony decided to put his career on hold to look after his dad. After several heart attacks and approximately 3 years of care, Anthony found himself in a situation where he needed to get back to work but faced barriers preventing him from doing so.

“I just kept receiving knockbacks, and I wanted to do something a bit different” he explains

“As a fully qualified electrician, I knew I had the transferrable skills to offer a company, but I was struggling to find the right opportunity”

At this point, Anthony’s search for work led him to One Manchester, who were offering candidates help with their CVs as well as work placements and return to work schemes.

“I discussed my skills and experience with Sarah at One Manchester and the prospect of working for a lift company was always in the back of my mind. Then a couple of weeks later, Sarah called to say she’d got a potential opening for me at Sheridan Lifts, it just seemed perfect – and I jumped at the chance”

Sheridan Lifts offered an eight-week work placement to Anthony, spread over a three-day working week. The placement would see Anthony shadowing one of our service engineers, George B.

“I went along with George to all manner of jobs on the service and repairs side, and I saw passenger lifts, goods lifts, service lifts, scissor lifts and through floor lifts, absorbing information that George relayed to me and observing how the process worked for repairs and maintenance”

Following completion of the 8-week placement, Anthony sat down with our Service Director Chris Chadwick who offered him a permanent position on a six-month trial basis. At the end of the six months, if both parties were happy, permanent employment would be offered to Anthony.

Both parties were indeed happy, and Anthony was taken on.

Anthony B gets his career up and running with Sheridan Lifts

“Following my six-month trial, Sheridan Lifts put me through my NVQ which I completed in 12 months”

Today, Anthony is a fully-fledged Sheridan Lifts service engineer with his own van and tools.

“I knew that I had a good engineering and electrical background, and I trained at Openshaw College as an electrician. I just needed the right opportunity, which Sheridan Lifts gave me

“What I love most about my job is meeting new people, being in different places all over the UK and having the daily challenges that this job brings”

“I’ll always be grateful to Sheridan Lifts for giving me this opportunity” Anthony concludes.
