What Types of Access Lift Do We Install?

At Sheridan Lifts, we supply a huge range of access lifts to meet any and all requirements. Every lift is truly bespoke, which means we’ll work with you to design something that perfectly suits your needs.

Undoubtedly the most popular type of access lift, platform lifts are designed to help users with restricted mobility to move between different floors of a building. Platform lifts are typically larger than standard passenger lifts so that wheelchair users have plenty of space to easily get in and out, either alone or accompanied by a standing passenger.

We can install domestic platform lifts to improve accessibility in your home, as well as commercial platform lifts to make public spaces more accessible.

An outdoor platform lift can be a great addition to a building’s exterior, enabling those with restricted mobility to easily access buildings that have steps leading up to the entrance. Outdoor platform lifts have additional safety features built in to ensure they can be used in any weather conditions.

As well as installing lifts in public and commercial buildings, we also fit lifts for homes. If your mobility has suddenly been impacted due to an accident, illness, or old age, a home lift can help you remain independent and stay in your home, eliminating the need to move into a single-story property.

For those who struggle to climb stairs, a home stairlift can make life that little bit easier and reduce the risk of accidents occurring. Compact and modern, our stairlift elevators won’t take up an excessive amount of space in your home, leaving a clear path for other stair users to climb.

Step lifts for wheelchairs are designed to carry individuals across a length of between 1m and 3m, making them ideal for ascending and descending short steps without the need for assistance.

Through floor lifts are another popular type of home lift. They run on a track that goes through a hole in the ceiling and are used to connect two separate floors in a home. This allows wheelchair users to get from the ground level of their home to the floor above with ease, bypassing the stairs altogether.

Making Your Business Accessible: Your Legal Obligations

If you operate a business that offers services to the public, you have a legal obligation to make your premises as accessible as possible under the Equality Act 2010. This is to ensure that people with disabilities receive the same services, as far as possible, as people who are not disabled.

In terms of how this affects buildings, many have to improve the accessibility of their lifts to ensure they comply with the legislation. For some, this can be as simple as adding accessible features such as floor announcements, lift car handrails, and accessible intercoms to an existing lift, while others have to install a completely new lift to improve access for disabled people.

If you’re a business owner who needs to install or refurbish a lift, get in touch with the Sheridan Lifts team and we’ll be happy to talk you through your options.

Access Lift FAQs

Disabled lift prices vary depending on the type of lift and the unique specifications provided by the customer, so it’s difficult to give an estimate until we know the details of the project. Stairlifts can start from as little as £5,000, but larger access lifts will cost several thousand pounds more.

Providing a high-quality service while also maintaining competitive pricing is our top priority at Sheridan Lifts. When you make an enquiry about our disabled lifts, our team will talk you through our transparent and comprehensive pricing options to help you feel confident that you’re getting excellent value for your money.

Accessible lifts must comply with UK Building Regulations to be fit for public or commercial use. According to the most recent government guidance on access to and use of buildings, the minimum access width should be at least 900mm.

However, these guidelines can vary slightly depending on whether your access lift is designed solely for wheelchair users or for both wheelchair and standing passengers. For this reason, it’s always best to consult with a lift installation expert to ensure you have enough space for the lift you want.

Note that these regulations only apply to buildings that will be used by members of the public – they do not apply to home lifts that are installed for personal use.

Access lifts are sometimes referred to as DDA lifts. This means that the lift meets the requirements set out in the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) of 1995. The DDA was actually replaced by the Equality Act 2010, but many people still refer to these lifts as DDA lifts.

A DDA access lift complies with the Equality Act and ensures people with restricted mobility can access public buildings without difficulty.
